Philadelphia – The Drexel field hockey team battled Villanova to a scoreless tie in regulation but the Wildcats came up with a goal less than four minutes into overtime to defeat the Dragons, 1-0. The game was the home opener for the Dragons and was played at Buckley Field. The win pushed Villanova's record to 2-1 while Drexel fell to 2-2. The game was the third overtime contest the Dragons have played in this season.
Three minutes and 15 seconds into overtime, Allison Doris deflected a Stephanie Campbell shot that found its way into the cage to give the Wildcats the victory. Just a minute earlier, Drexel had its best chance of the overtime period when Christina Mastropaolo (Harleysville, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) took the ball away from a Villanova defender and raced in toward the goalie. With Wildcat defenders closing in, Mastropaolo fired a reverse shot that hit the side of the cage.
Both teams had opportunities in regulation, but neither could score. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) made a season-high nine saves including two on breakaways. In addition to her saves, McAndrew fearlessly charged out of the cage on multiple occasions to kick the ball to safety during promising Villanova attacks. McAndrew held a Villanova offense that had averaged six goals a game in its first two games to just one goal on 15 shots. Villanova goalie Maura McCormick made four saves in recording her first shutout of the season.
Villanova's 15 shots were five more than Drexel but both teams earned seven penalty corners apiece.
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8 when the Dragons host Lafayette at Buckley Field. Game time is noon
